Day 6 --Mile 2332 - Mile 2692--Dawson Creek, British Columbia

It was a sad day on the high plains of Alberta. Fishy had enjoyed all of the cross-continental trip he could bear and went on to better things. Wish we had known about the green pea earlier. Emily would have glady hand fed him that. Lord knows we tried everything else. She contemplated resuscitation, but decided that nature had taken its course. We were sad to see Fishy go, but we also hated to watch him having such a hard time. He was afforded proper respects.

Mike, Em, David and Fishy before the release.

Fishy gently carried to the creek.

Fishy's final resting place in Dawson Creek. A short creek side memorial.

After finishing our business with the fish, we went to the Dawson Creek Fall Fair and Festival. This is a town of 14,000 who definitely know how to have a fair. Lots of people having a really good time. Good food cooked by local church groups. Reminded us of home. Really fun professional chuck wagon races at the Dawson Creek Fair. They have a Canadian Professional Rodeo starting tomorrow. Wish we were going to be here for that. Who knew there was so much money involved in the wagon races. So many rules and out-riders. Horses were incredible and so well taken care of. This was lots of fun.

Mike and David on the Twister!! Mike got quite a workout. Reminded me of the teacups at Disney.

Emily, Mike and David on the Hang Glider at the Dawson Creek Fair and Fall Festival

We left Edmonton this morning in a cold rain. You heard that right--COLD RAIN. The front desk manager assured me that they were thrilled with the sudden cool spell as they have had three weeks of unseasonably warm weather with lots of humidity. She was hoping that the cooler weather would calm tempers . . . The day stayed cool. We were too cold tonight to stay late at the fair for the fireworks at 10:00. Fireworks start that late waiting for it to get dark.

The drive from Edmonton to Dawson Creek was delightful. We enjoyed seeing forests full of poplars, many varieties of spruce and pine. Actually in Dawson Creek Emily and I saw our first aspens. We also saw our first moose, but unfortunately it was road kill. Poor thing!

I did find an interesting food booth at the fair advertising "Texas Taters." I told them I was from Texas and wanted to see just exactly what Texas Taters were. They yelled, "Oh, No! We've been caught." They were very good thinly sliced spirals, deep-fried, of course. The condiments were ketchup or vinegar. I thought they were good either way!

David really made us laugh tonight. He was quite impressed last night at the Courtyard when he read the menu for room service. He would have been glad to stay in the room and just order meals! Well, tonight when we were looking for somewhere to eat after leaving the fair, David suggested that we just call room service. The Traveller's Inn might have 20 rooms. Not sure what they would "cook up" for us!

Bedtime for the nuggets. Join us tomorrow night from Fort Nelson.

I waked up Vader this morning and told him about the death in the family. He was so sad until he ran downstairs to the "Girl's" breakfast!! I wish the trucker had let us know sooner...... Have yall skipped Fort Nelson?

Seems appropriate for a fish from Abilene to be buried "on the trail" North! Kind of Lonesome Dovish!! I will see if we can lower the flags at City Hall in Fishy's memory. Cold weather sounds great!!

Emily,
I am so sorry about your loss, but remember that Fishy is in a better place- that big fish tank in the sky, no cats allowed. I really dont think that fishy would have liked Alaska anyway.
It really looks like yall are having a good time, thanks for posting the picts.
Doug said that we could not lower the flags at city hall-but we are checking with the State offices to see how they feel about it- more later when we get a reply.
Have fun and travel safe
Debra

Had a Beta once...was cleaning out its bowl real good like I did many times before, filled it back up with water and dropped him back in. It was amazing to see him this time almost jumping out of the bowl as soon as he was plopped in. I thought, wow...he must be in some kind of good mood, swimming around from top to bottom at lightning speed. Few minutes later I came back and he was a "floatie". I stuck my hand in the water to fish him out...water must have been over 100 degress. Guess when I was cleaning out his bowl forgot to turn the handle to cold water. Not even a pea could have helped him.

I was at a local fair recently driving my rig in eastern WA. They didn't have Texas Taters but did have fried Snickers. What one will try to fry at a fair...more extreme the better. I was listening to the radio, G-man Gordon Liddy and he was talking about how he had fried Coca Cola at a fair...how do you do that? You could probably even sell a fried Beta fishy at a local fair and it would move.

Hey--
Yall still got 2 labels that say Day 4. Is there some reason that you labeled it that way? It seems like yall were in different spots, so it doesn't seem like one day. Yall should change it so yall can keep track of the days.

Amy..............!

Since no one else seems to want to answer this question from you two wonderful little girls, I will. Marianne sent two messages on the same day, the fourth day. All is well...I hope......

Why do you have two Day 4s?? I'm so confused!!
Please...somebody, anybody, OUT THERE explain..I can't eat, can't sleep, can't even watch my reruns of Baywatch until I know! Will they ever make it now...will the two Day 4s atually make them early, or late, or are they in a loop and will repeat over and over ala Bill Murray and Groundhog's Day the movie....

First D.J.: Okay, campers, rise and shine, and don't forget your booties 'cause it's cooooold out there today.
Second D.J.: It's cooold out there every day. What is this, Miami Beach?
First D.J.: Not hardly. And you know, you can expect hazardous travel later today with that, you know, that, uh, that blizzard thing.
Second D.J.: That blizzard - thing. That blizzard - thing. Oh, well, here's the report! The National Weather Service is calling for a "big blizzard thing!"
First D.J.: Yes, they are. But you know, there's another reason why today is especially exciting.
Second D.J.: Especially cold!
First D.J.: Especially cold, okay, but the big question on everybody's lips...
Second D.J.: On their chapped lips...
First D.J.: On their chapped lips, right: Do ya think Phil is gonna come out and see his shadow?
Second D.J.: Punxsutawney Phil!
First D.J.: Thats right, woodchuck-chuckers - it's
First D.J.: GROUNDHOG DAY!
Second D.J.: GROUNDHOG DAY!

,,,,great flick.

Hi Amy! I'm so glad you are keeping up with us! There were two posts from day 4 because one was while we were stuck in Billings tending to Fishy, and the other was our driving post. The post about Fishy has mileage 1532-1532 because we didn't actually drive on that one. But probably we should change the name to simply "All Creatures Great and Small" Love you guys!!!
